Your natural hair is beautiful. Sometimes we need to keep reminding ourselves of this fact.

It may sometimes seem hard to maintain natural hair but we promise it’s not. We will be here to help you better understand your natural hair and how to easily take care of it.

Let’s face it, we have been greatly miseducated when it comes to our natural hair. Growing up we were told that it is tough to manage. That some people have “good hair” while others have “bad hair”. That we look better and more professional when we wear our hair straight. That tight hairstyles promote hair growth. Do you see where I am going with this…

Love-Hate Relationship

As women especially African women, having long/big beautiful hair is something we often dream about. However, everything we have been told about our natural hair is negative. So instead we have been trying to fix it, get it to behave rather than accept it for what it is.

Our love-hate relationship is so bad that we have even encouraged others to damage it if we weren’t causing the damage ourselves.

Do you remember the amount of smoke coming off of your hair while it was blow-dried or flat ironed hair? The smell of burnt hair and grease? In our minds, there was nothing wrong with that scene. And if it wasn’t straight enough, we asked for more “…nataka ilalae kabisa!…kwanza hapa hujachoma vizuri…” (I want it to lay down completely… And this section here, you haven’t straightened this properly)

Tight Styles

Don’t even get me started on the tight hairstyles. Sleeping after a trip to the salon for some new braids was impossible for most of the first week. Again we would say “…shika hizi za mbele vizuri zisikae untidy…” (Make sure you grab all the hair on the hairline so it doesn’t look untidy). No wonder traction alopecia was and is so rampant!


And the craziest of all, relaxers. It is hard to imagine myself sitting through a retouch session now. Scalp burning and the stylist trying to convince me to give it a few more minutes because it wasn’t ready yet. Or the constant suggestions to use super relaxer next time because regular just wasn’t getting it straight enough (sic). Yet we always wondered why our hair was thinning, why it wasn’t growing (meaning getting longer), why it was so brittle, or why we would have so much hair left in the sink after a salon visit… The answer is simple, we didn’t know how to give our hair the love it deserved.

The Natural Hair Movement

The natural hair movement has brought with it so much information on how to care for our natural hair. Now we not only see luscious afros in the streets but more and more women willing to wear their hair in its natural state than we have ever had before as well.

The negative comments … that’s a thing of the past. These days, you are more likely to have to explain why you relax your hair than you are to explain why you wear it natural. Times are certainly changing.

The pioneers of the natural hair movement choose to love and accept their hair as it grows out of their scalp. Thanks to them and everything they have taught, we now have the tools we need to have grow out beautiful, healthy, luscious curly and kinky hair.

Slowly but surely…

Let’s get this right though. Loving your natural hair does not necessarily mean spending three hours a day in front of the mirror. In fact, it just means taking a few minutes out of your day to maintain and rejuvenate your hair.

Here are some tips to get you started.

1. Keep Your Hair Moisturized

Water is your hair’s best friend. You can either use water, a store-bought product with water as its main ingredient or a simple DIY mix you make at home. Just make sure not to be heavy-handed to avoid weighing your hair down.

Depending on your schedule, you can practice this step in the evening just before you sleep or in the morning while getting ready for your day. Whichever works best for you.

Lightly spray water or the product onto your natural hair and massage it through your strands making sure to get every strand hydrated.

2. Seal Your Ends and Your Hair

They need the most attention. Think of them as the elders and treat them with extra care. After moisturizing your hair, rub some oil, oil-based butter or natural butter through your ends.

Use rich, thick products like our hydrating butter or even our moisture milk to lock all that goodness in.

Don’t forget to massage the product throughout the rest of your hair for the same benefits.

This is simple, yet it not only helps to keep your hair nice and soft but also protects your ends from wrapping around themselves causing single strand knots.

Do your Research

Learning to take care of natural hair is a learning curve. Its called a journey for a reason. We have to re-educate ourselves on how to take care of our natural hair and debunk every myth we learned.

This means learning what works for your hair and what doesn’t. You will need to educate yourself about density, porosity, thickness or the fineness of your hair strands among other topics that will be covered in due time.


Accept your Hair

It is what it is and it is gorgeous! It is beautiful, and it is you. If you embrace it for what it is, you’ll be surprised at how enjoyable your journey will be.
