Coconut oil continues to grow in popularity around the world. Its popularity stems from its many amazing properties. These include management of many skin conditions, promoting hair growth, supporting weight loss, lowering cholesterol and slowing down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Coconut oil is an edible vegetable oil. It is extracted from the kernel or meat of mature coconut fruits. That’s the white stuff inside of a coconut. Because it is processed in many ways and for different uses, there are many grades of coconut oil.

The scientific name of the coconut palm tree is Cocos nucifera. A name you will see frequently in the ingredient list of most if not all of our products.

The purest form is, of course, extra virgin coconut oil. It is processed with the least heat and chemicals. While you can use this grade on your hair and skin, it is great to buy this grade if you will be eating your coconut oil or using it for oil pulling in which case you are putting into your mouth.

Oil Pulling: an ancient Ayurvedic dental technique that involves swishing a tablespoon of often coconut oil in your mouth on an empty stomach for around 20 minutes. 

This wonder oil has many applications, reducing cholesterol and thereby improving heart health, helping to lose weight and several other positive health effects. We would advise that you seek medical advice if you plan to use coconut oil to improve your health.

For our purposes here we focus only on its benefits in hair care.

Coconut Oil in Hair Care

An excellent ingredient in hair care products it penetrates the hair and scalp, unlike petroleum/ and or mineral oils. Once absorbed it promotes shiny hair and overall nutrition for both the hair and scalp.

1. Vitamin E

It contains Vitamin E, an oil-soluble vitamin that is a natural antioxidant. Studies suggest that it helps to reduce the amount of oxidative stress and free radicals that cause the hair follicle cells in a person’s scalp to break down. This supports a healthy scalp and hair. Vitamin E also promotes hair growth, reduces hair fall and promotes shine. The result: longer, stronger, shiny hair.

2. Adsorpotion and Protection from Hair Damage

Hair can get damaged by swelling and shrinking of its fibers because of water retention. ‘Hygral fatigue’ often occurs when hair is left wet for a long time. Through its ability to adbsorb into the hair strand coconut oil prevents the retention of too much water within the hair strand.

Coconut oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. These play a big part in ideal hair and scalp protection by preventing many kinds of infections.
